The Writing Plan – Buwahahahahahahaha!

So I started off with my big goals:

Keeping up hope...

TWO First drafts this year. Scheduled for June and November as usual.

TWO previously started books FINISHED (one of my intended is 1/3 done, the other 2/3 done, so pretty much this amounts to a third book).

TWO Edits of previously written books.

And then this is the tricky one: SELL TWO BOOKS. I have 4 that I think are done enough, and TWO agents are currently reading the full of Medium Wrong, so if I get representation for THAT, I will let said agent guide on which OTHER book to push out. If neither wants it, I will continue to shop it, as the agent nibbles of 2 for 2 seems like I have my package in order. I even had 4 more on my list but they wanted synopses so I didn't send, but I had to send a synopsis with one of the fulls so now it is written so those are just emails.

My tactics

Dedicate one hour daily to writing (more on those WriMo months, but I've gotten out of the habit) – blogging doesn't count.

Rotate editing back into my commute time (I really could ALWAYS be editing but then I would be reading much less, so I am going to alternate.)

Get back to PLANNING. No pants for me. I started three books in 2016 that petered out because my plan was too squirrelly.

If I hit writing blocks, other than WriMos, allow short stories to rotate through.

Specifically

January: I will be PLOTTING. Working at both the stories I intend to finish this year and getting a feel for which is more developed. I will also continue querying Medium Wrong if I don't hear from either of the agents that have it in the first few weeks. And I will finish the short stories I started to get back in the practice of actually writing daily.

February: I will edit Kahlotus Disposal Site so I have a #2 ready to go.

March: I will finish the book chosen from my January efforts.

April: I will assess Undoing, another epic—this one new adult, that is meant to be a trilogy, each in three acts and has the first two acts written, but I already know serious revisions, as it may end up rather timely in the current political climate. Also work on plotting my BuNo book.

May: Edit book #2. Which one depends how things go.

June: BuNoWriMo. Which book idea depends a bit how things go between now and then...

July and August: Endangered and Undoing are both epic, enormous projects.... Imma commit to working on one of these in July and August while I also assess and plan the rest of the year.

November: Only other pre-commitment at this point is that I write a book for NaNoWrimo.

Promotion Plan

I have some abandoned (or nearly) spots that I need to get back to. I also want to shoot for blogging twice a week—helpful or at least relevant in the first half, entertaining or at least silly in the second. If I have author interviews I will do those Wednesdays, except first Wednesday which is Insecure Writer's Support Group.

2017 Fitness Plan

The Problem: I am at least 100 pounds overweight (gads that sounds scary) and everything I've tried in the last decade has not worked.

The OTHER Problem: I need to work on my core and flexibility.

So here is the plan:

Eating: I am on my own 5 nights a week now. I am working out a 2 week rotation for a meal plan that will use weight watcher points, but also the Type A diet (only approved foods for Type As). If I am eating the same things and I have pre-calculated, then it should be easier. I will plan in a few slurges... number and size dependent on the calculations I make for my plan. (I've done an initial, but I need to fine tune it with the exact points and Type A list)

Sleep: Get enough of it. 7 hours is hard during the week, but there is evidence it helps metabolism efficiency.

Cardio: Continue my walking. Add in 2 days a week of dance (I will be looking for videos, but may just find a good dance list and call it good.

Strength/Flexibility: 3 days a week of core (just 10-15 minutes... any recommendations for a video?) and 2 days a week of limb strengthening (lunges, squats, weights) and stretching (these will be my dance days—so two workouts a week to shake things up)

So there... that is THAT plan...

Any of you doing new years fitness plans?

2016's Gunna ROCK

And now we reach one of my favorite annual rituals. The PLAN *buwahahahahahaha*

Now if you've known me a while, you know I always make a plan, and it is hit and miss on whether I follow through. But I have a history of doing better on even years, and I also seem to do best when I have dropped into a pit and so accept the enormous amount of work that needs doing.

So I am hopeful...

The Writing Plan

I have THREE sorts of books I write. Unfortunately, the one I love VERY most is the hardest to sell—the long epic tale. So while I have three of these slated, I have accepted I need to get either my mystery or my YA solidly going before people recognize my name enough to try those other stories.

This year I WILL get one or the other rolling.

Mystery

I think this is probably the genre easiest to break into. (and I've got a bit of a track record, even if I am looking at a break between books) BUT... While I have two first drafts in the series I want to sell, neither of them is the “first book” that I think I can hook a publisher with. One is pretty good, the other needs a serious rewrite because I tried something that didn't work (to do with changing PoVs—this is the wrong tone of book for that). So my next TWO books I write will be part of this series... Then in FALL I will try to sell traditionally, but by the end of year I will have FOUR, so if that isn't going well, I may decide to release one a quarter in 2017 on my own.

YA BEFORE THAT

I have three nearly done YA books (much nearer ready than the mysteries) BUT one doesn't fit style-wise with the other two. Also Appearing will be part of a series, but it is a series that currently only has the one book. Kahlotus Disposal Site and Medium Wrong both have a touch (JUST a touch, but a touch) of paranormal to them. And I have a couple other books I can adapt for this that are WRITTEN (so only need to be rewritten). So my plan is to edit Medium Wrong to “perfect” or thereabouts, and try to sell it in first quarter. Edit Kahlotus while I do that and if MW doesn't sell, try Kahlotus. Between my two mysteries I will both WRITE one more for this series (stand-alones, but of similar genre and style to establish a brand) and adapt another so if neither has been sold by say, August, I will work out a self release plan to start in the fall.

In Sum, that is 3 new first drafts written next year, two BIG rewrites, and several polishing edits.

It is also querying 3 books (1st, 2nd and 4th quarter) and planning a self pub cycle if the first two of those don't work...

I have a calendar, but that is probably less important than the big picture.

And the SUPPLEMENTAL Writing Plan

This is my weakest point... the trouble with my writing success (or lack thereof). I have some mental blocks with marketing... some annoyance with some theoretical ways a person “should” go about it. I don't know how to do this well, but I DO know I have not been doing it, so I intend to make a point of mastering a piece of this each month.

I also plan to work with my newly adopted writing group—cross promotion is part of what we plan and they seem to already be better at this then me, so I will learn from them and work hard not to be the drag on our team.

NON-WRITING

Fitness, fish slap, whatever
Fitness

So I say this all the time, right? I always plan to work on this. But I think I've figured out some boosters for the “old thing that worked doesn't work anymore” bit. I have ALWAYS eaten on a Weight Watcher plan and I walk about 25 miles a week. To that I am ADDING:

Keeping the food between 10AM and 6PM
A 15-minute, 3-Day-a-Week Super-interval thing
A supplement I did some research on

That last is something that would historically have made me very sketchy, but it is all natural so shouldn't hurt and the science analysis on it I watched suggested it really may help. I will let you know if it does.

Theoretically I should have some goals related to home or family, but the family rarely conforms and the home stuff makes me tired, so I will say I will try to be PRESENT and call it good.

How abut all of you? 2016 plans?

The Non-Writing Goals for 2015

Fitness:

Know what I've realized? I haven't been truly fit since I started writing. Don't worry. It's not you, it's me... and what I mean by that is I am capable of total and utter obsession, but with a limited number of things. And fitness, to my poor addled brain, requires this obsession. I've never been able to do it unless it is the THING I am doing.

This has to change and I know I need to figure out how, but in the short run, I think I really need to allow the obsession in January so I can get some habits formed. I followed Weight Watchers SO CAREFULLY and SO SPECIFICALLY in September and October and lost a grand total of two pounds. That is a lot of work for a whole lotta nothin... I'm thinking this time around I need to do something I've thought was taboo since I was about 16. I need to get drastic. I'm thinking I will start with a cleanse. I've never done one, but hey, why not? I will look for one that is said to be a nice metabolism re-set.

The other trick I plan to mix into following low-end Weight Watcher points is NO REFINED... no white flour or sugar, no highly processed anything, no fake sugars (really the only sugar source I''m going to permit is fruit and the bit of brown sugar I can't skip on my oatmeal). I think the chemistry ban may help... a bit caveman-ish, but NOT skipping the fruit. Anyone who tells you cavemen didn't eat fruit doesn't understand hunter/gatherer culture. I DO get though, how carbs can prime you for hunger, so I think I may segregate fruit to the early hours of the day (fruit and carbs before noon, none after? Still working on this)

The final eating trick I learned from my friend Leslie... mini-fasts, she called them... confining all food to an 8-hour period. Our bodies, biologically, expect feast famine cycles and work most efficiently this way, so I intend to eat all my food between 10 AM and 6 PM...

Part of that trick ALSO wants you to exercise while your body is depleted to burn of the last of the prior day's food, but walking to work sets me up for this—though I will need to add something weekends.

The gym is also going to make a reappearance. Hell, I'm paying for it already and haven't been since October... And that Flex and Strengthen thing... I need to work it in... I will spend some time New Year's Day hammering this out...

The Day Job:

I know I grumble about this because it interferes with my writing, but I honestly consider what I do very important. I do research geared at reducing health disparities and making my med school and health system a more equitable and welcoming place to work and study for people of all backgrounds. It is stuff that matters.

And I've struggled since our office became this big behemoth. I went from being the single researcher for a physician with disparities interests to being part of a 20-person team with a cubicle. I am an introvert who needs to dive into my tunnel to be productive and I feel like I've really fallen down on this, so this year I pledge to work out a system whereby I can be more productive at this important work—productive enough by day that I can leave it at the office, which is something I've struggled with this year.

My cousins and our families rafting this summer
Family:

Some of this has to do with HWMNBMOTI so does not belong online... suffice it to say we've talked and have a plan that I am committed to. The other is my kids. At 19 and 16 they often seem to not need me, but I feel like my daughter has spun her wheels a bit this year and needs some help finding traction and my son is just entering the 'get that application ready for college' part of his life, so they deserve my diligence.

Reading:

Remember my pledge for one book a month by a blog buddy? If NOT, you can join this, TOO. It is HERE. I really encourage you to--it is a great way to be mutually supportive. I ALSO intend to read a classic every month. And then a third book (when the classic isn't super long) that falls into the genres I try to write in so I can keep up a bit. Three books a month seems about right for my reading speed when I consider I also read a book of my own most months as part of the editing process...

Blogging:

Man, has my blogging commitment fallen off. Part of this is the stress of that reciprocity that I KNEW with the day job I couldn't do as well. And I think that is right. I really can't keep up several days a week if I intend to do it right. So I think my plan is this: Twice a week, plus a guest here and there (maybe twice a month). Monday and Thursday seems to make the most sense (except the first week of the month where Insecure Writer Support Group would move me by a day). That gives me three days to do my reciprocity attempt, eh? That is the part I really need to be diligent about—visiting a few (6-10) blogs EVERY day instead of just the days I blog. I should probably clean up my blog roll, too, to better reflect who is still visiting ME regularly so I see your new stuff as it goes up and not just when I am “back-visiting”

Balance:

This is the trickiest part and I know it. I am STILL suffering burn-out from that serial and the shifts at work. I haven't found my balance yet, but by-golly, I MUST. For me this means getting a bit rigid about a schedule for a while, I think. I can't seem to fit it all in if I haven't given it a place. Everything takes more time than it seems like it should, unless I've set the timer and said “it only gets this today”... So January I am going to SCHEDULE my balance, tweak that schedule in February, and hopefully by March I will have fallen into it more naturally.

So that's the PLAN *BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*

8th Day of Christmas

On the 8th Day of Christmas the Tart's true wish for you is 8 Resolutions
7 Nice surprises
6 Inspirations
5 Brand New Books!
4 Old Connections
3 Second helpings
2 Christmas parties
And the patience to shop and stay sane!

Say what? You say.... Well I figure 8 is about the right number of goals to hit for the year. Maybe three writing or professional goals, three self-improvement habity things, and two interpersonal... or something like that. And I am wishing for you not just to make them, but to manage them. MEET those resolutions, friends!

Blog Book Buddy Resolution

So know how I sometimes have really good ideas but am sort of crap for execution? This is one of those... I have recently read a couple GREAT books by author friends and it occurred to me I should make a better POINT of it. And I want to be HELPFUL and what is more helpful to author friends than REVIEWS. So I am making a resolution for 2015 to read at least a BOOK every MONTH by by blogging author friend.

And I am inviting YOU to do the SAME.

See, and hopefully it ALSO means we all get more reviews
Here is how it will work.

1)  Sign up with the McLinky below but link YOUR PAGE that lists your BOOKS so anyone wanting to read from the list of participants can use that. ALSO—when you name your page, include GENRE(s) so it is user friendly

Like this: Hart Johnson—mystery and suspense

2)  I don't want this to be cost prohibitive—some of us struggle, so if you are willing to give any books for FREE email me (hartjohnson23@gmail.com) with the book name and how people would get it (your email or a link to the freebie). I will keep a running list on the page with the tab above for Blog Buddy Book Resolution—feel free to add to the list if you publish more books. You may ALSO want to note how they could get it for free on your linked page listing your books, but you don't have to.

3)  I am asking those who participate to leave HONEST reviews about the BOOK. Anyone who thinks they might be tempted to 'respond in kind' if someone leaves a less than sparkly review, this is not your gig... move along. No harm, no foul. We all honestly benefit more from these honest reviews

4) Next December maybe we can have a party where we all share our reviews on the same day and if we GOT more reviews, share about THAT... And if it was successful, we can renew it for the following year.

How YOU can help:

1)  SIGN UP! Participate! These things are always more fun with friends. If you aren't published, you can still play—just put FRIEND instead of your genre with your name so everyone knows you are being supportive.

2)  I could use a clever badge and my art skills seized when I was about 8, so if someone wants to make one...

3)  SHARE! Invite people! Be sure to note though, what link we want—it can be confusing if people just link their blogs.

The Writing PLAN 2012

BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I'm very content to pretend this is me.
Oh, how I love a plan... especially a writing plan. And largely, they work for me. I posted last year's plan last week and my evidence of success—which wasn't complete, but I DID get a lot done last year... And THAT is why I get so geeked about a plan...

Are you ready? (maybe a little scared?)

First... Let me explain.
No. Is too much. Let me sum up.

What Needs DOING, broadly

Polish: LEGACY
Big Rewrite: CONFLUENCE, ILLUSIONS (which also needs a new name), CONSPIRACY, WHAT ALES ME, MEDIUM WRONG.
To Write: I got Armageddon coming at me from four different directions, eh? I will write TWO of these this year. I will write a 3rd book iff I get a formal publisher request for such (a 4th on the cozy contract or if WHAT ALES ME sells as part of a series) MOSTLY, though, I am going to concentrate on rewriting and polishing some of this other stuff.

January:
Revise LEGACY one last time.
Finally hammer out a GOOD pitch for it.
Enter that baby (the book, I mean, not a real baby)
Type in rest of WHAT ALES ME.
Potentially Tweak Kahlotus (have some ideas based on publisher feedback—need agent powwow)

February:
Fill in holes and first revision CHRYSANTHEMUM CAMPAIGN.

March:
CC to peer readers for the month.
Revise WHAT ALES ME.
Plan promotional campaign for AZALEA ASSAULT

April:
WHAT ALES ME to peers.
Revise CC per feedback. Read out loud. Revise again.
Begin CONFLUENCE revision.

May:
CC to agent
Finish CONFLUENCE revision.
Revise CC per agent

June:
Turn in CC
BuNoWriMo: One of these pesky Armageddon stories...
RELEASE AZALEA ASSAULT

July:
First Revision MEDIUM WRONG

August:
MEDIUM WRONG to peers
Revise WHAT ALES ME, read out loud
WHAT ALES ME to Agent

September:
Final Revisions MEDIUM WRONG
MEDIUM WRONG to Amy

October:
Slot for specifically requested revisions for MEDIUM WRONG/WHAT ALES ME
First revision summer Armageddon book

November:
NaNoWriMo: Thenother Armageddon? (yeah, I think so... but things change)

December:
Finally polish CONFLUENCE
If time, begin revision ILLUSIONS

Ambitious? Yes. Subject to change? Absolutely. But I always do best if I have a direction and something to look to when I finish something... otherwise I can spin my wheels too long before getting back on track.

So what are your writing goals?

And Happy New Year to All of you!!!

Networking the New Year

I'm facing a VERY exciting New Year... You know why? 2012 will be my first EVER book release. That is such a huge deal to me, I can't even put it in words... But you know what ELSE it is? This stressful culmination of 'have I been doing this right?' on the social networking.

I know I've had some successes. I have over 600 blog followers (more if you count the FB set, but I don't know the formula to remove overlap, so I sort of look at that separately). I have a bizillion Facebook friends (okay, more like approaching 3000, but it's a lot). My Twitter roll keeps growing... But have I learned how to USE this stuff?

And I feel exactly like this. Slimed.
What I Know NOT to Do....

ME ME ME ME ME! *cough *

This strikes me particularly hard on Facebook, but it happens other places, too. I am a joiner. It's part of the FOMS, yeh? So I am part of MANY writing groups. And sometimes I will come on and open my notifications and see the SAME person has posted in half a dozen (or more) groups. Do I EVER go see what they have to say? No. As a matter of fact, I NEVER do. I KNOW what they have to say. SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM. They are trying to sell their damn book.

Now I am not without sympathy for wanting to sell the damn books... In fact I will want to sell MY damn books. But that is NOT the how of it.

IDEALLY, I will have generated enough good blood through helping OTHER people out that I only need to share now and then and MY NETWORK will pass it along. It carries more weight anyway, doesn't it? Somebody ELSE promoting something?

Facebook Plans

So My Facebook Resolution is to work harder helping OTHERS promote this year. I already do this for people I 'know'--and by know, I mean people I connect with through more than one system—my blog friends, my ABNA friends. But I am going to work at helping out additional people here... Build the equity, if you will. Not so much it cheapens my notifications—probably I will stick to some metric to not overdo it... three shares a day or something...

My OTHER Facebook lesson is PACE YOURSELF. I think the people who get away with the ME ME ME ME ME (who aren't really doing that—they are also promoting others, but never mind) are people who once a day or so share a review or a signing notice. They don't just keep putting the book link. They share something new that has happened related to the book each time. So we are sharing a journey, not seeing a repeated commercial.

Twitter Plans

I just need to find a tutorial to learn how to use the darned thing. I promote my blog. But I don't read feed. I even miss a lot of mentions and messages. I just get overwhelmed. I THINK what I need to do is group people so all those people I am just following for courtesy aren't clogging my feed. I really only want to see book stuff most of the time, though I can see times fitness stuff, local stuff or art stuff might interest me. But it is almost 2000 people to sort to figure out who goes where... ACK!

I know, I know... I just need to...

GoodReads

Once I have a book number, I think I can set up my author profile. Then I will beg all of you to fan me... since that's how I roll... erm...

I think I need to do the same at Amazon, which means I REALLY need to figure out how this works...

Speaking of Amazon... I will do ABNA again. As Always. And NaNoWriMo... And BuNoWriMo. These events are great places to connect with people on a deeper level.

Blogging

There is no question that this is my favorite social medium. I feel like the depth is SO MUCH greater, and I love that. But Blogging could suck up as much time as we would give it, couldn't it? Through the holidays, I've fallen down on visits. I think what I need to be is more organized. At one time I visited 30-50 blogs a day and I just can't do that very often, but if I was strategic, I could get to more people regularly, rather than the same ones all the time (though I love visiting the ones I do)--still... there has to be a system, yes?

My plan is to be more diligent to not neglect visitors and blogs I love. I am doing pretty good on the writing of blogs... I get them up and all. I plan to write most weekdays, but leave wiggle room to add a weekend or drop a weekday as stuff comes up... averaging that five days a week.

The only exceptions I plan are Blogging A to Z (see button in upper right if you want to do this fabulous April event), and NaBloWriMo in October. These are just both events near and dear to my heart, so I will continue to support and participate in them.

At some point (maybe March) I will need to make a more concerted effort to get around a little, though I think my actual blog tour will be in the few weeks following my book release.... oh, to come up with a clever event... I will have to see...

I guess that is all that's on my radar. Are there other places I should be? Any of you changing things up in the New Year?

Year of the BEAST!

*dons best Brother Maynard voice*

In this year of our Lord Two thousand and ten. And. One. In the land of Asia Major, on this week the first of the second month on the fifth (third) Third day, it was declared to be the year of the RABBIT!

*gasps ensue*

As ye know from the blasphemous enchanter. Tim. This can be. Misleading.

*leers at crowd *

As can be seen in this historical documentation, bunnies are not to be. Underestimated.

And so with this in mind, I am here to prepare you for what to expect...

If you go... READING about rabbit years, you will see a lot of nonsense about CALM... about a STEADY PACE... about how the rabbit has a lot less leaps and stops than that moody tiger (of which I live with two *mutters*)... but does THIS sound like the lesson you learned from the tortoise and the hare? What's MORE, does it sound like the Beast of Caerbannog?

Just a little BUNNY they say.
Nothing to be AFRAID OF they say...

PAH!

I say it is time to grit down and give it a push while all these other pansies are lollygagging along!

I declare, in THIS, the year of the RABBIT, I will:

EDIT FIVE OF MY BOOKS!

1)  LEGACY
2)  Kahlotus Disposal Site
5) Confluence

WRITE FIVE NEW BOOKS!

1)  Cozy mystery #2
2)  Microbrew Mystery the 1st
5) Cozy Mystery #5

And I will get an additional contract!

And so it will be.

If you are curious what OTHERS say the year of the rabbit will bring, you can look at the nonsense these people have to say:

jump-start-your-business

And Happy New Year to all of you!

Just Write Already!

There was an article from Writer’s Digest recently on finishing a book and I think it had an excellent point. The advice… WRITE FAST!

We hear all the time to turn off the self-editor, which can be really hard, but I’ve already bought into without any argument—I do enough OTHER kinds of writing to not be married to the first words I get down on some subject… get all the information there, then make it pretty, in that order.

But the point I hadn’t seen that I think is FABULOUS is that if you write FAST, you are stuck with the bare bones of the story at the end. THEN when you go in and add the muscles and tissue, it still looks like the recognizable structure. If you write SLOW than it can develop off in odd directions and not look recognizable when you get through.

Having written a couple fast and a couple slowly, I am going to fall into line and endorse this idea. I am having to loop back and re-plan and retie and re-plot in order to get Conspiracy back into line because I took to long to do it. Granted, I wrote another book, edited and polished yet another, and stopped to do that pesky query thing in there, so I wasn’t actually WRITING slowly as taking detours from writing.

Now I believe in the end all three books will be better for this loop back, rethink process I’ve got going, but it really should have been part of the rewrite, not the first draft.

My New Plan

I’ve said before that I intended to have writing months and edit/query months, and I am sticking with that, but I am adding a new rule…. ONE FREAKING PROJECT AT A TIME! That isn’t to say I am giving up my little side projects, but ONDWAY has been stressing me out, so I think I am going to drop to a less predictable cycle…write when I write, like I have with my fanfics. Because I think that has interfered with my mojo, too—having a schedule to meet.

When I get all my ducks FINALLY back into line, I will finish Conspiracy, and then I will turn to just editing until June, when, with friends, we plan to have a writing month (a sort of private NaNo—though not so private you can’t join too, if you want—it’s just not PUBLIC). I think that may just be how I do first drafts from now on… June and November, with some time in between to write the holes… We’ll see. I’m pretty open to changing things up to see what works.

And NOW an Opportunity For YOU!

Moonrat, the Blogger of Editorial Ass (who all writers should be following anyway, she is helpful, entertaining and kind), is holding a Write Your A$$ Off DAY… this weekend. She’s not rigid. Pick a day, any day (even today—sorry I didn’t tell you in time—Monday’s okay, too), and then Tuesday report back with your success.

Having a family, one of whom is recovering from pneumonia, I probably can’t dedicate ONE day, and I’m not positive I’m up to writing again yet, but I think I will TRY to give it an 8 hours over the three days shot, just to see if this is the kick in the butt I need to get going again.

So I know it’s short notice, but I encourage all of you to give it a whirl.

Balancing Act

[Warning... this blog rambles]

When I was little, I wanted to be a 'Tightrope Actress'--not sure exactly what that is, but I think I've managed to approximate this earliest of Goals. What does a Tightrope Actress DO after all, but balance precariously, trying to achieve her goal and fame, all the while lugging ALL of herself across that little rope.

Moderation Monster

I've battled moderation my whole life, always preferring instead to take on just as large a load on the other side... you know... balance. I love to eat and drink, so I exercise like a fiend to balance it out... It has typically worked until now... But I find that after forty, my joints and time constraints, not to mention that slowed metabolism, make it so I CAN'T exercise enough to balance how I'd like to eat and drink...

So too, in my life... there are just too many things to keep taking on MORE things to balance the things I overdo it on. I may just have to make peace with moderation after all...

So I'm trying... take for instance the Clutter Moderator...

My husband would have me just keep picking up the little things as I go along. Sounds quite moderate. But being the all or nothing gal I am, it drives me NUTS to look at the dust after that pesky pile is gone. If I'm going to bother to pick up, I'm going to CLEAN the damn thing (not moderate at all). When he cleans the bathroom, he swirls stuff in the toilet, wipes the counters and uses a mop. When I clean the bathroom I take EVERYTHING OUT, scrub ALL the surfaces including the newly discovered 'use an old toothbrush to get the toothpaste drips out of the inside surfaces of the toothbrush holder'. I get on my hands and knees to scrub the floor... That is NOT moderate. But maybe if that's the only room I clean this weekend, I can CALL it moderate.

*boldly ignores piles of folded laundry that need putting away*

But he has far lower standards, so doesn't understand why I hate to clean so badly... Am I making any sense?

I just keep wondering if the writing or the eating will ever be things I can do moderately. Probably not.

Book Tour Fitness Plan

It's begun... and at the moment, for me, moderation means going the OTHER direction to balance how bad I've been for the last five years. Today is day one, so I can hardly evaluate how things are going, but I have my tools in place... notebook for the food and exercise diary... weighed and measured this morning (scary). Began my day with a power walk (wish someone had told me how cold it was—might have opted for the elliptical...) And I will do my strengthening/flexibility stuff once I get a little writing in—that's moderate, isn't it?

I just can feel that for four years my obsession has been writing, and suddenly another obsession is coming into play—one that needs to—for my health if no other reason (though the Book Tour is a reason that makes me happier, never mind there is not yet a scheduled book tour)

And the Writing Balance!

I've filled in the holes for about half my NaNo novel thus far, which will hopefully move it SOON from the writing pile into the editing pile, which gives me one less thing to obsess about (editing obsession has been slated for March and April) *coughs* Oh, I see how you are... spotting all my rationalization for what it is, instead of believing my fantasy that I might learn moderation.

But it seems to me, maybe the self awareness that I just am going to have rotating obsessions is about as close to moderation as I will ever get, and if I can balance with THAT I ought to just call it good.

And Just In Case: The Safety Net

I've been thinking a little lately, because of a friend of mine, about back up plans.

This is one of the places my early philosophy served me well. My mom always was clear that I needed to be able to support myself because you never knew what was going to happen (she was widowed at 28). I took that to heart and used my education. In my adult life I have ALWAYS worked. In fact I've had more weeks with two jobs than time I've had off, either between jobs or for maternity leave.

So while I want to sell the books I write, I have my solid safety net.

Fitness-wise, I don't think there is such a net, except that I reach a point where I'm unwilling to buy a larger pair of pants. Maybe my walking habit is a safety net of sorts. I had a massage before Christmas (thanks boss!) and the woman commented on how SOLID my legs are. They are bigger than I'd like, but they are rock hard. She asked me how long I'd been walking to and from work and I calculated... ten years of at least 4 miles a day every work day. As much as I need to fix something that's broken, I can see that if that wasn't in place, things could be significantly worse.

I guess the key to both safety nets, are I managed to put some detail entirely in my own control. It's not as fun or sexy as instant glory, but it is infinitely more reliable.

New Year's Resolutions

My husband gave me a bad time last night, something to the effect of, “What-- resolutions you'll never keep?” And it's true, I don't always manage all of them, in fact sometimes I manage none of them. But I'll tell you what I told him, because I believe it's true. I do a far better job on these goals when I set them as resolutions than when I don't. I think it is the “on your mark, get set, go...” thing. A starting point I can anticipate forces my hand. It may ALSO help that January is a miserable, depressing month anyway. I went to college on a quarter system, and winter term was short (typically only 9 weeks) which meant that there were ALWAYS tests and papers, the whole freaking term. There was no opportunity to take any down time. And you know what? I always got my best grades winter term. (spring was worst because suddenly the hot, naked men came out of the woodwork, but I digress...)

Anyway, I think there is a trigger in my brain that in winter I can grit down and just get to it. So without further ado...

I. Book Tour Fitness Plan

A. Lose XX pounds through following Weight Watchers eating (counting points for food), modified for my lifestyle as detailed a few days ago, and adding exercise as follows.

B. Aerobic activity 6 days a week minimum.
    1. Walk to and from work ALWAYS (barring ice, sub-zero temperature or more than 4 inches fresh snow)
    2. Do intense aerobic activity 4 days a week (enough to sweat) for at least 45 minutes.

C.Strengthen core and build muscles (20 minutes, 6 days, alternate)
    1. Exercise ball for core
    2. Use hand weights for arms, shoulders, legs...

D. Increase flexibility: You know, I used to be really bendy. I was a gymnast once upon a time, but after 25 years of fitness exercise without adequate stretching, it's gotten bad. I will do 10 minutes a day, immediately after the muscle stuff.

II.Make every Feasible Effort Publish
A. Write, Write, Write: continue nightly dedication following the plan I've laid out to meet all the pans I've got going at the mo.

B. Continue Networking
    1.Facebook
    2.Blog network
3.Dig deeper for connections (follow up on Borders woman)

C. Follow Query Plan until it works

D. Edit in designated months (those corresponding to query intense months)

E. Participate in Friend NoWriMo in June and NaNoWriMo in November.

F. Amazon contest if queries have no nibbles in January.

III. Work harder at making myself easier to live with.

A. Dedicate a Saturday a month to an organization project (for hubby)

B. Try to keep my crap out of the living room so at least ONE room is clean.

C. Try to fully listen to kids.

D. Meditate on this mother thing.

IV. Work at organization in the NON-writing parts of my life

Resolution Rules

Oh, I know... Boxing Day is barely gone and January is almost a week away. Who wants to think about resolutions? There is a week of parties yet to be had. But the thing is, to do it right takes a little time.

My LAST boss (not the groovy, generous CURRENT boss, but the compact, all-business model) focused on identity and academic success. She was smart and driven (if a little difficult as a human being) and honestly—some of her ideas TOTALLY apply to New Year's Resolutions.

At the beginning of the school year, she would ask (middle school) students “How do you see yourself a year from now” --they were to give their self visions (she called the 'possible selves') and how they'd achieve them and then we had a formula to rate the likelihood of those goals GETTING them anywhere (we tested them against things like GPA, and you know what—our formula worked).

THAT is what a New Years Resolution is, isn't it? So let me let YOU in on the secret.

I will start with my most frequent resolution.

LOSE WEIGHT. I am nearly always trying to lose weight or maintain a recent weight loss. Clearly I am not good at the latter, or the former would not have to keep barking back at me, but since it is the world's most common resolution, I am going to work with it.

If I say my resolution is “To Lose Weight” and leave it at that, I will fail. I guarantee it (you will too—sorry to be the bearer of bad news). Oh, I might lose a few pounds by some vague 'watching it' that I can succeed at for about the first three days in January (Rose Bowl snacks notwithstanding)

If I instead say:

“Beginning January 2 (see—allowing for my Rose Bowl -GO DUCKS!), I am going to follow the Weight Watchers eating plan,” suddenly my chances for success increase dramatically.

Why? Because I have a HOW, and not JUST a how, but a how that prescribes the right kind of eating. But WHEN have I succeeded? Am I ever done? Do I want to lose five pounds? Fifty pounds (I confess it is closer to the latter for me, but this is about YOU). How do you know when you're done? Do I want to lose two pants sizes? (okay, maybe it IS about me) Do I want to fit into my skinny jeans? The ANSWER may be all of the above, but defining the goal in ONE measure gives you a point at which you can succeed.

So:

Beginning January 2nd, I am going to follow the Weight Watchers eating plan (the one I do because I KNOW it and it is healthy and flexible, features I know from experience that I need) until I have lost 2 pant sizes.

See that? Measurable goal and reasonable method. Suddenly this is something that can be achieved.

I'm not done yet, though. For starters, a BIG goal like weight loss ought to have multiple strategies. Not just eating, but EXERCISE (both aerobic and creating those fat burning muscles). Possibly some TROUBLE SHOOTING (if X comes up, Y is how I will get around it), Maybe some thinking about how real life fits.

For instance, my husband is our cook and it is really unreasonable for me to ask HIM to make special food for ME when he has four of us he feeds. But Weight Watchers, with its POINTS allows for WHATEVER he cooks IF my other eating fits.... so maybe I count my meals from dinner to lunch instead of breakfast to dinner, so that in a 24 hour period I can adapt to what has already been served for last night's dinner—if we should have *gasp* pizza, then breakfast and lunch the next day need to be considerably lighter. It isn't strictly what Weight Watchers recommends, but it is an adaptation that over the course of a week balances out, and it is necessary for my personal lifestyle (the refusal to cook one, I mean).

See how it gets more complex? I figure three strategies, each with some detail, is enough to give a person a reasonable shot at achieving said goal IFF you also add some motivation.

Add some measures that are EXTRAS to keep you excited... measure with a tape measure, try on the pants... so the scale is not the only success measure (experience here says sometimes one stops but the others go—it keeps a person motivated). What you want is MANY chances, ways and measures of success, because then you might really succeed. And you want some baby-step success celebrations... maybe for each five pounds you lose, you get to buy yourself a book you want (if you budget is better than mind—though if I go used, I could do that), or you get a night off to do something you enjoy... small rewards along the way.

So the formula:

On X date, I will begin trying to achieve XXX, by

1) strategy 1
2) strategy 2 and
3) strategy 3

After 1 month I will evaluate how well the strategies are working and adjust them if necessary.

For each success of XX kind, I get one trip to the dungeon to make my boys dance like I like.

Now Let's Apply it to One I Haven't Done in Detail Before

GETTING PUBLISHED

Let's see... If I understand this process, what I need to have is a GREAT BOOK, and an AGENT and a PUBLISHER. Great book supersedes all else and I've learned enough to know my FIRST step is to speed up my first couple chapters. I need to suck in the reader faster than I do, so strategy #1 is rewrite chapters 1-3.

I also need to finish polishing the 2nd half, but that doesn't need to happen before I start shopping for an agent, as once a person has requested the WHOLE THING, they will see that I know how to do this. And the timing of getting a request for the WHOLE will probably come AFTER requests for earlier pages. So the next strategy is QUERY.

This is a classic 'give it details and make it measurable' goal writing. Something like: I will send twenty queries in January, and every time I have gotten back five responses, I will send five more out. That is a high enough number to wash out the 'never responders' and theoretically, by a month, should get enough feedback (or non-feedback) to give an idea whether the tools are working or need to be adjusted.

Possibly I can reduce the number once I start getting some nibbles.

Oi! But what if there are no nibbles?! Well, then either I've failed at the rewrite of early chapters, or my query has a big giant fail. So maybe I need to add a strategy of going through Query Shark if the Query seems to fail completely after round one...  It's also possible I should think about approaching some publishers instead (I have a friend exploring a Border's connection--that will more likely lead to publishers than agents--can't drop that!)

[Do you see how complicated this can get?]

I swear though, that having behaviors you can check off gives you a sense of control and keep you engaged, corrections that can be made if something doesn't work improves your chance of success, and multiple strategies means SOMETHING might work.

So it's a good idea to give yourself a few days on those resolutions... I wish you luck!
