The Culling of the World

So I read a blog piece this week that got me thinking. I know. That's dangerous. But it was about the moments in history where something, natural or man-made, causes a sudden fast drop in human population. Things like the Bubonic plague, typhoid Mary, the Spanish flu. But also World Wars, land wars in Asia, and natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.

Well this article pointed out with the HUMAN variety, there was always an ostrich.

Lemme esplain... No, is too much. Lemme sum up...

First you have to watch this Blackadder sketch about the Ostrich that started WWI.

The point is world conditions can get to a point where ONE LITTLE THING will set off a stack of Dominos. The ostrich. But the more important thing is everything needs to be poised... the Dominos stacked.

And the article noted how we are poised right now... just like that. The xenophobia trickling across the globe, the hike in natural disasters making everyone nervous, the world seen in real time because of cell phones. It isn't just the US. This is the stuff of Brexit and Putin's Imperialism, it is girls disappearing in India because nobody cares to keep them safe, it is rainforests converted to grazing land because profits matter more than air. But in the US is is the hate rhetoric, cops shooting innocent people, corporations buying our government.

It's frightening. When I think about my kids and whether they will ever have kids—what will their world be? Will a natural disaster on the scale of an asteroid or the supervolcano just wipe out everyone? Or will it be the more subtle allowance of companies to poison our water so we all die slowly? Or will there be a revolution because we live in a country divided between nationalism and populism?

So what will be our ostrich? Any ideas?

Hi Hart - it's a horrible thought ... but the bombing of the UN Aid convoy into Aleppo - does not make for an encouraging story ...

The world leaders need to be replaced ... we need kind, thoughtful, understanding leaders - we don't need to be conquered ... we need to live a peaceful life and give others our sort of life too ...

I haven't seen the ostrich clip ... think I'll leave it for now - cheers and sincerely let's hope life in the world improves for many. Cheers Hilary

Our ostrich could be either of the two candidates becoming president.

Sadly, I don't disagree. The orange one more than the other, mostly because he doesn't even seem to understand the need for diplomacy. So easy to say really the wrong thing when you have no filter.

ooh - the ostrich. I think I need to focus on the rainbow right now. I learned with my one attempt at roller-blading that one moves towards what one looks at. I think this is always true but frighteningly true at a quick speed with little protection. I don't want to look at the brick wall - I want to look at the gate.

Oh, I like that, Jan! Good way to look at it.

We have to hope for the better but accept their are issues in this world heading straight to hell in a hand basket. A touch combo to take in. Revolution! That also does not turn the world to ash or start WW3.

I think it will be a literal ostrich. They will mutate and go on a rampage--it will be the ostrichpocalypse.

In all seriousness, this is a scary truth, but Jan has the right take. We have to look at the gate or we will fall into a black hole of despair.

I've seen the whole Black Adder series, but I don't remember the bit with the ostrich. :(

The natural disaster tie-in to everything else doesn't make any sense. How the people of Pompeii lived had nothing to do with the volcano.

Ostrichpocalypse! Holly wins! That's too funny.

I have to agree I've never been so pessimistic about an election or the state of affairs. It makes me wonder if people will ever move beyond greed and fear and hate.

The news about climate change keeps getting worse and more threatening. The Middle East is imploding. But humanity has pulled back from the brink before, so let's hope we can do it again.

Maybe Bible prophecies have the answers some are looking for. I don't trust the media at all. Much of what is reported about Donald Trump is based on lies, distortions, and misunderstanding. If more people looked deeper into issues in order to unravel the interwoven truth and lies, we'd figure some of this out. I don't expect this to happen to any great extent as making decisions according to feelings is far easier than using logic and rational thinking.

But I'd probably better be careful in what I say as I'm likely expressing an opinion that is not too popular in the blinding snowstorm of ideologies we are in that has so many groping to find their way. I might even lose Facebook friends and blog followers if I talk too much of this stuff. That would be such a tragedy!

I'm thinking the same as Lee and Alex. Biblically speaking these are the signs of end times. I remember when I was a kid, reading scripture that said the end times would show people choosing to hear what satisfied them over truth (think churches and pastors) and children will turn against and betray their parents. At the time, I thought, well good the world is still in good order. Welllll it looks to me like those things are present. I even remember the first time I saw a kid stand before me at school and cuss out their parent. Then...the parents did it back to them. I thought, wow. Times have changed, she says holding onto her cane, and not for the better. To me it seems everyone is corrupt, neighbors, friends and family, government and those in charge of fragile populations. The ostrich's motive is as usual greed and selfishness. With those present in the soul, there will be no prisoners taken. It's one for one-- self. And yes, I've been watching crime tv again where lust and greed win over family and reputation.

Yeah, I have seen too many times, historically speaking, that line up with end of times to think that is really a thing, but then my ideologies don't line up there. I worry people who DO believe all that will try to force the issue--think they see something and then act to make it happen. THAT is my real concern. I also really worry that the people who believe that selfishly won't act to preserve the world because they figure it is ending anyway, when in reality, whether or not it will end, where is the harm in environmental policies? If it is ending, we have done no harm. If it is NOT ending, then we have saved our planet.

I've never heard of this ostrich/WWII connection before.

We live in such troubled, scary times now. I wrote a poem about it, which I posted on my blog in the summer. If anything, the world seems worse since then. There seems to be no break from it. I try to hold onto those stories of hope. I hope we can find our humanity again soon.

I used to see the world that way--watching for it to fold in. Eventually, I figured out that life is life. Sometimes the worst circumstances make for the best in people. Although I would love my family to grow in safety, their lives are their lives. Their challenges will be their challenges. And more importantly, they will rise to the threats and come away well. That much I know. So, what is there to worry about? Watch, yes. Prepare against disaster, yes. Be afraid? Nope.
