Flamingos, F-Words, Freivald and Fielder

[Theme for A to Z: An animal, an amusement, and an author]  And posting fail... thought I scheduled it for THIS MORNING, but it had a PM on it, so here it is...

Flamingos

You know... there just aren't enough pink animals. Seriously. I mean can you name another? I understand flamingos are pink because they mostly eat shrimp... not a bad diet. I've never seen one in the wild, but I love the flamingos at the San Diego zoo.

A Bunch of F-Words. And by that, I mean Fitness, Fat, Fiber, Fishoil...

If you are just dropping by, as opposed to being a regular around here, you may not know, but I started doing Weight Watchers at the beginning of the year. I've lost 24 pounds, as of my 13 week weigh-in, so making progress. I'm walking a lot, but still haven't managed to make myself do more weights or stretching in—so spank me. But I am doing the things I HAVE to apparently.

Funny thing, though—I noticed a while back that my back and joints hadn't been hurting as bad—this was BEFORE the weigh loss efforts... but not that I'm at it again, they HURT again... which seemed fishy to me, so I googled... Turns out it's NOT fishy, it is the opposite of that... it is Unfishy. As in the lack of fat in my diet is causing my poor unlubricated joints to ache and the SOLUTION is a fish oil supplement. I'm also trying to include some good fats as part of my points: nuts, olives, avocado, fish. I think it's working, but not great, but I don't know if the not great is really just a comment on my inability to remember to take the darned supplement. ANYWAY, my Couch to Keg team is ALSO gearing up to add a little more UMPH now that we won't get frostbite doing it.

Any of you working of fitness projects?

Freivald and Fielder

These boys are two of my ABNA buddies, great guys, both, and both have a couple books I could choose, so I thought I'd pick one from each and share with you a blurb...

Twice Shy by Patrick Freivald

High School Sucks. It's worse when you're dead.

Ohneka Falls is a small, Western New York town where everyone knows everyone and nothing of note happens. Ani Romero is a sixteen-year-old girl who wants to play sports, hang out, and kiss Mike, her middle-school crush. A childhood carrier of the zombie virus, she died at fourteen but didn't become a mindless, brain-eating monster. Her controlling mother forces her to join the emo crowd to hide her condition behind a wall of black clothes and makeup, and her friends abandon her.

When creeper Dylan learns her secret, he falls into obsession, with Ani and with death. She bites him in self-defense. Persecuted by the jocks and ignored by Mike, Ani struggles through the motions of life hoping her mother's research unveils a cure, or Dylan dooms them all to a hungry, walking death.

As her emo facade crumbles in the face of jealousy and obsession, Ani knows that the worst thing she can do is be true to herself.

Voices in the Field by J. Allen Fielder

"Voices in the Field" is a collection of short stories by J. Allen Fielder. Titles include previously published and unpublished short stories, from the eponymous "Voices in the Field," to the humorously creepy "Mom's Eye View," these stories were written to thrill, chill, and make the reader wonder "What the hell is wrong with this guy?" Other titles include "Liquid," "Truck Stop Love," and "Homemade Pie." Stories range from horror, to mystery, to children's . . . and various points in between.

Everyone needs some fat in their diet. We use only olive oil at our house since it is the healthiest fat.
Some other birds have pink in them, but not to the extent of a flamingo.

24 pounds? That's wonderful, Hart!

I've attempted the Couch to 5K program a couple of times, but it never takes. My shin splints always get in the way. I'm always on the look out for low impact workouts though.

Since I'm mostly not hanging out online this month (ha, right!), I decided I'd make April my boot camp month for writing and working out. My output for both seems to have strangely dropped off some since I started blogging. Hmmm.... Anyway, I'm back on the treadmill five days a week and lifting light weights once or twice a week. I write better when I get a good workout in, so it's all good. :))

And, wow, congrats on losing 24 lbs. That's fantastic!

Woohoo! Good job on the weight loss there, girlie! Hubby and I started juicing at the beginning of the year and playing a game at the gym called "Pickle Ball". It's like playing ping pong on a tennis court. Very fun, very active game. So we've both lost some weight as well. Keep it up!

Flamingos are so groovy. I just saw some plastic flamingos in the bowling alley display case :) Congrats on the weight loss. I ride my bike to work instead of drive and try to walk on all my errands. It helps. Avocados are a good source of fat and yumnmy, too. Oooh and Twice Shy looks so good. I love the premise.

Congrats on the weight loss Hart! Diets are a bitch, so good job. :)

And the zombie story sounds really cool. Definitely a different twist.

And, as far as pink animals, did you know that there are actually pink dolphins that live in the Amazon river? VERY cool looking creatures. And, supposedly their brain capacity is 40% larger than humans, which, given some of the people i've met, is not that hard to believe...

Pigs are pink and can be cute. And butterflies (if insects count) ... but I definitely agree. There is a shortage of pink animals.

As for the fat in a diet - I knew that about dogs, but not people. Lol. I guess it makes sense for any diet.

If I have to eat a lot of fiber, I say another F word but I will refrain from uttering it here! :-)

I saw two pink flamingos flying along side me the other day as I drove the Creole Trail, delivering rare blood to a rural hospital. I lack the words to say how graceful and beautiful they were in flight, wild and free.

Yep, been working on weight loss and being more active and eating better. Portions size was a huge wake up call for me, and I know now that I'd rather ache from exercise than from just...being. :)

But no matter how much weight I lose or how sunburned I get, I will never be as svelte or as pink as a flamingo. :)

Wow, that's awesome Hart! Congratulations! And holy cow those flamingos are gorgeous :)

Hi, Hart,
Congrats on keeping up with your exercise. Like you, I have a challenge remembering to take my vitamins.

Like the sound of Twice Shy.

My hubby is doing an alternative to the Ideal Protein diet (because IP is $80-110 per WEEK and um, no)and has lost about 40. YAY to both of you! (and boo to me, who just complains about the 10 I have to lose. . .)

And hey, I know those guys!

Huge congratulations at the weight loss, Hart. It's hard (I know), and even harder to keep at it, especially when you could justify fudging it ("that huge slab of chocolate would be good for my joints!"). I hope you're feeling some positive benefits that might motivate you to keep going. :)

Aren't there breeds of animals that lack fur (e.g., cats, rats...?) that would, therefore, be pink? :)

I really like the sound of these two books, so they're both going on my long list of books I want to read.

Omega-3 fats are very important for body and brain, but I still don't take them as much as a I should. I've got fish oil pills and flax seed oil and now that you mention it I'll take them before toddling off to bed. It is hard to remember to take all those supplements.

But I gotta say, the older I get the more I need to stretch every day. When I don't my body just doesn't feel right, and if I skip a couple days my body punishes me. I hope you don't have an old back injury that's acting up?

But you've lost 24 pounds? That is fantastic! And no doubt you'll lose more until you're happy with your naked self.
