P is for Publisher's Weekly

Is this still a thing? I mean I know it is still a thing because I still get emails from them--the newsletter, but it has been a couple years since I opened said email...

But when I was first blogging and trying to polish that first book this was the MUST DO way of keeping up with the industry... then self-publishing had its honeymoon and there stopped being rules.

Well maybe there were rules, but nobody knew what they were. (Lots of people claimed to, but after about 2 years of chasing them I learned they were ever-changing so there was no point learning them until it was time to apply them).

* So back to Publisher's Weekly...

* Has anyone had success from either following advice, crumbs, or news from this source lately?

* How? What is the best way to use it?

* If not, has anything replaced it as the MUST READ industry source?

* Where do y'all get your publishing news from?

ALSO: I am over on the Parallels blog today talking about my favorite villain: Pharma.

It's expensive. :(

Publishers Lunch is abbreviated, but free.

I subscribe to the Hot Sheet from Jane Friedman and Porter Anderson. Publishing news for writers (you have to pay, but it's not expensive).

It is expensive. Bookstores, libraries, and reviewers are often the ones who subscribe. The only thing I use it for is getting reviews.

Book Business Insight has a site and puts out a daily newspaper with news, and it's free.

I've never gotten Publisher's Weekly but I've subscribed to Writer's Digest for years and rarely have read anything in it. I save the emails I get from them just in case I might read those someday.

Honestly, between all the other newsletters and other stuff I get about writing and publishing I think the best advice I've gotten is from other bloggers when they post on the same topics.

If I start writing more seriously than I do now maybe I might consider trade journals, but right now I'm not going to spend any more money on stuff I'm not using.

I've explored their site, but that's about it.
