YOU!!!

So let's just get this out of the way. I LOVE YOU!!!

Bloggie readers, you are the highlight of most of my days. I LOVE this blogosphere!

So what is the problem?

Blog networks... they really are sort of this way, ne?
I love YOU, and YOU, and YOU, and... ...

THERE IS NO FREAKING PLURAL OF YOU IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!!!

Now Southerners have their y'all... and it's cute... but let's face it, I've never lived below the 42nd parallel. (Ann Arbor is at 42.16 and this is the farthest south I've lived)

Eugene, Oregon is 2nd at 44.04, then Portland, Oregon at 45.31 and Moscow Idaho at 46.73.  In other words, I've lived most of my life closer to the north pole than the equator (30 years above 45th, 14 years below)

That's a little scary, actually, that all 4 cities I've live in are within 5 degrees... but never mind. My POINT is it denies me authenticity with y'all. (though I retain my right to use it as I write FICTION).

Now I ALSO know that in larger, poorer cities in the Northeast there is the you'se option. (yous?  youse? --what is the spelling... I think people who use this regularly aren't actually literate, though I have some fabulous friends who joke about it in both the Bronx and Philly)  But I am currently ALSO the farthest EAST I've lived... Michigan. Which is technically midwest (though I have argued extensively on why this is really the middle east--Colorado being the MIDDLE.)

*snort* (though I'm not evil, just naughty)
So I decided... why not consult LATIN? You know... because English is Germanic *shifty* But seriously... where ELSE does one look for changing words. Isn't Latin like... the word BIBLE... wait, no, that was Greek, originally... But you know what I mean... Latin is for smart people... So I decided to pluralize YOU, I would look to LATIN...

Now there are not OU ending words according to Wikipedia (which is the most reliable source, yes?)

So do I choose O or U... But I made an executive decision, as it's my blog and the U had the funny little line over it to tell me the pronunciation is what I wanted...:

portus, –ūs port, haven, harbor m.
Singular Plural
Nominative portus –us portūs –ūs
Vocative portus –us portūs –ūs
Accusative portum –um portūs –ūs
Genitive portūs –ūs portuum –uum
Dative portuī –uī portibus –ibus
Ablative portū –ū portibus –ibus

Now I don't know what ablative means... let's check...

Ablative: a name given to cases in various languages whose common characteristic is that they mark motion away from something, though the details in each language may differ. The name "ablative" is derived from the Latin ablatus, the (irregular) perfect passive participle of auferre "to carry away".

WTF? Random pic found in 'blogosphere' search
Okay... I can go along with that... YOU is away from ME (unless I'm feeling frisky, anyway)

So the plural of YOU would be Yibus!

Problem solved! You heard it here first. Henceforth the plural of YOU will be YIBUS...

I LOVE YIBUS!!!

I think I'm the little gingerbread person with the huge grin, the one with two eyes. I probably shuldn't have hit the champers before posting Z...oh dear, fingers aren't typing correctly...love the new addition to the bloggy words. YIBUS - most helpful, thanks Hart.

I tend to go with the very Oirish 'ye' (pronounced yeeee). I thought this, among many other words, made my Irish accent instantly recognisable until I got to New York. There people thought I was from Queens, Pennsylvania or Australia. Very strange.

Cruella Collett said...

I love yibus too! And most of all you ;)

Excellent, digressionary deduction, my friend. In fact, you might be able to deduct this on your taxes next year. That's how well deduced it was!

I learned something from youz here tonight! Thanks! I hart you too, btw. Your posts are always fun and sexy. What better combo could there be? None. That's what. None better combos.

You totally remind me of a librarian right now. LOL. Yes, I am one myself, so I oughta know!!

Grammatically incorrect Aussies quite often say "yous guys"...poor grammar in our cute Aussie way. :D

It started innocently enough....I thought it was gonna be a four liner, max. Then...YIBUS! LOL! I should have known better, it is Hart we are talking about.

I've got a better solution! :o) In Greek, 'you' is 'sou'. And the plural of that in Greek is 'sas'. So 'you' in English as plural could be 'yas'! :o) I think that's cool. You shouda gone the Greek route instead of Latin!!! hehehe

You has no plural, neither has sheep, but for some reason ewe does. Go figure.

Alison DeLuca said...

...and then there is the word Yizzens, which I believe is used in outlying portions of Pennsylvania.

And Wizzens love you, Hart!

Rest, Hart! I prescribe rest. ;)

This is probably not the time to kvetch about cases, is it? ;-) Fourth declension, rather interesting choice there, as it's one of the rarer ones (if anybody cares, "status" is 4th, so the plural of "status" is, in fact, "status" - impress your friends the next time that pops up on Facebook! *snort*) Buuuuuuuuuut in the sentence "I love you", the pronoun "you" is actually in the accusative case, as the direct object of the verb... *hides in corner from pitchsporks*

I'll shut up now. I've been up since 4 watching the wedding. ;-)

I would offer "youlot" as in "you lot" for plural but yibus sounds thoroughly NAKED so yay!!! Take care

Cherie Reich said...

Yibus. I like it. :)

In other language I know (understand) the single and plural forms of "you" are different. But the English-speaking world has shown that it's possible to live a happy life with only one "you" >:)

I've lived in New England all my life but I'm still partial to "y'all".

However, Yibus sounds pretty damn awesome too.

And those cookies, however random, look delicious.

YIBUS! Ha!

And we all love YOU, too. How could we not, with a post as brilliant as this one?

I'm over here 'coz my blog has gone missing

Yibus is good... Way down south we say "all Y'all." :D

love you, too, honey~ ((hugs))

Well said, Hart! And I refuse to use ya'll.

Don't worry about the monogamy. It's just a socially acquired habit, against nature >:)

I love how you ablative the Y! I live in the south, but am not from here. I wonder how long I have to live here before I can say Y'all(with a New England accent)lol

Yibus is so cute; Fun post~

Well, I love YOU. This post was amusing as all your posts are and you lift up my mood when I am in the worst states of mind. Like this morning. I'm in a crappy mood, but I am reasonably cheered now.

Yibus works for me! I can't picture the Queen using it though. (I've been up since 4am watching the wedding) :)

Ha! Thanks for teaching us a new word...it looks like you had to do a lot of research on this post and I'm happy that you took us along for the journey.

I wonder if those are "day-old" Christmas cookies? Or maybe ornaments that the Mom didn't pack herself (you can imagine what they will look like next year.)

Thanks so much for stopping by to visit me!

Just dropping by to catch up on some fun around here. I wish yib (I'm guessing that's the singular for yibus, right?) a happy weekend.

We love you, too!

I think everyone should use y'all, though... :)

Amo, amas, amat... I remember that much from Latin.

As for the plural of you, how about youse?

Jo Schaffer said...

Love going back to Latin. Yibus is an awesome word. Use it next time you're speaking publicly--haha.

"Im pleased to be here to address yibus."

Awesome. They won't know what hit them. (=

This was great. It read like free flow writing - I think there is some technical word for that, but I don't know it.

Andrew Leon said...

Um, I think, being from the south, I'll just stick to "y'all." I like y'all, and I've been spreading it all over CA for more than a decade. :P

Mary Aalgaard said...

Hmmm. Were you really tired when you were coming up with this? Funny. Yibus. I'm not sure it will catch on.

Ha ha...Elsker de også :)Deg singular de plural unfamiliar...So there :P

Cool post! I took Latin in college and that was oh so many years ago. Thanks for reminding why it's a dead language! Are you currently in A2? I'm in Plymouth - just 15 or so miles from A2.

Jan Morrison said...

having read your post and then all the letters I have to vote for 'yaz'. But that's because I'm sort of brain dead - me brains are dead. Trying to think what we'd say down the south shore - - we might say 'bies'(boys but also girls) as in 'I'm the bies that catches the fish, that brings 'er home to Liza' - so 'the bies down the bay sez y'all thinking of coining yibus - well I dunno but that might be a bit of alright - least ways with the bies down the bay, bie.' got it? oh and I love you too, lots and lots.

missed this 1st time round (blame the 'wedding') but I also dare you to use Yibus in public -- on your World Domination Tour, of course -- and go with Jessica & convert that to SASSY - cos that's what a Tart is... except when it's this kind of deep dish hot sassy Tart with indoEuropean roots and Yibus/sasberry flavor. I cannot use youse (sorry) cos it's heavily Glaswegian and the part of Scotland I come from disowns that other part... ... am surprised nobody suggested YE - the biblical, but then you're a modern Tart... lolxxxx
