Kid Tales

So on my mom's side, I am the oldest cousin. When I was four, there were just three of us—Gerry and I and the baby (Jeff). They lived in Spokane, about 80 miles away, and so we saw them for birthdays and holidays, but not a ton...

Gerry, me, and Jeff
Now my mom was intent on speaking to me properly. She corrected any grammar mistakes, pronounced words properly, and read to me every night. I don't remember the source of knowledge for the tale I will tell in a moment, but it isn't surprising I had it.

My aunt and cousins were down visiting, and my Auntie M. was going to take the childings somewhere... she said, 'come on, kids!'

And I promptly turned to her and said, 'kids are baby goats.' I was 4.

Auntie M., whose temper ran quite a lot hotter than my mom's, was TICKED. She told me many years later she about decked me... yeah... I was precocious...

So I am going to share some kids while I do my K thing...

Get KRACKIN!!!!

*cough* (did I mention I may be liberal with spelling?) So yesterday I learned about a Writing Event. A Round of Words in 80 days....  It is about setting your OWN writing goals in this 80 day increment, with a goal of maintaining balance (yeah, we all know how THAT works, but it IS an admirable goal)

So in the next 80 days, which is more like 72 because I'm starting late, though the last one is a WriMo that goes through June, so if I am WORKING on it, I can assume in the 80 days, I will make it...

1)  finish 1st draft of 2nd Cozy Mystery (I am maybe half way)
2)  line edits and editor requested changes for first cozy mystery (this is a one week edit, then one week read through)
3)  REVISE (one of two) Legacy if Kahlotus stays in ABNA, Kahlotus if it doesn't
4)  Write a fresh first draft during BuNoWriMo (Burrow's WriMo in June which you will all be invited to take part in)

For anyone interested in more detail on HOW I will break these down, I am doing that today at Burrowers, Books & Balderdash.

Kanoodle versus Kaboodle

So I had no K word ideas at all yesterday, and I was watching All My Children (one of my guilty pleasures) and Erica and Jack (foundation characters who are frankly, nearly my mother's age, though they look good—Walt Willy, in particular, I like a lot—but they are getting married (again) and so Erica is saying 'no Kanoodling'...

Now from the context I know what that must mean—I mean I've heard it before, but I hadn't really THOUGHT about it until I thought 'HEY! That starts with K!' So I decided to find out what TECHNICALLY I was talking about. Here is what the urban dictionary has to say about kanoodle:

1.  getting it on like wild monkeys; they were upstairs kanoodling, now my sheets stink.
2.  Close head to head chat with the opposite sex; often at the local bar. No hitting implied! I kanoodled at the pub with a couple of nice ladies and the regulars were jealous
3.  A kanoodle is when you run up behind someone and slap your hand back and forth between their inner thigh while you make a noise by moving your tounge back and forth in your mouth. Today, i ran up behind Tom and kanoodled him!

Plus a few rather more descriptive ones... plus some odd ones about smoking...

and then Kanoodling...

4.  To be in the act of any form of sexual activity be it flirting or other such things foolish adolescents get up to. If someone were to express their willingness to be kanoodling with someone else they would usally be talking about the person in question CONSTANTLY. An example of this would be: 'OMG! TOMtomTOMtomTOMtomTOMtom' 'nye and izzy were kanoodling at charlottes' 'jade and tom are so gonna be kanoodling at chloes on saturday'
5.  The gross behaviours of a new couple. The overtly lovey-dovey actions that sicken everyone not in that relationship.  Usually in the form of cuddling and un-nessecary giggling as a result of public tickling. "Omg, look at Suzy and Tommy Kanoodling in the corner." "Yea, they should get a room."

So there is not a ton of agreement... I am pretty sure the show used either the first or fourth meaning... but it really looks to me like whether Kanoodle includes the Kaboodle depends on which definition you believe! (outrageous!)

Okay, and onto the K blogs... Both of these ladies take breaks now and then, but when they are blogging, I try to visit them as often as possible.

Ketutar Writing:  Ketutar is from Finland, living in Sweden, and I find her perspective and the things she knows fresh and interesting.

Kierah Jane Reilly:  Kierah is in Oregon, which makes me jealous, and is about a decade behind me in her life stage, but we have a lot of common ground, so I really enjoy reading what she has to say.

Happy Hing Day!!! (see H if this confuses you)

Hmm, for some reason when you related that scene ('Kids are baby goats!') it reminded me of Hermione Granger!

What fun, Auntie M sounds nothing like Auntie Em from the wizard of Oz. Goats, you and goats...ha ha.

I'm loving the baby goats, I mean the kids. They're so kute! ;)

I'm so sure of several things here:
1. Your mom was my Aunt M
2. Nuts (as in crazy) is your N word or should be
3. You wrote this either very late at night or very early in the morning :0) Either way I'll stop now and clean up the coffee snorts.

Such cute kids! :)

Good luck with all the writing on your list! I'm sure you'll knock it out in no time. It's always kind of nice when there is both creative writing and editing at the same time (at least, seems easier than being creative on 2 books at once.)

Ok those kids are the cutest!! When are the next ABNA cuts?? I gotta check it out. Best of luck, Ms Tart!

Hart Johnson said...

Niki-aren't they? I'd totally have goats if I had a farm.

Ted-I'll take that as a compliment!

Siv-yeah, not like Em at all--she is actually a very cool aunt, but patience with lip from a preschool kid wasn't her strong suit.

Christine-they ARE kute, aren't they?

Mary-I will blame that I had 3 blogs to write... there WERE a lot of typos, though also some things that were meant to be that way...

Elizabeth-I don't mind the 'proofing' editing and writing, but the rewrite editing drains me... no creativity left... fortunately, the bulk of what I face first is proofing...

Hart Johnson said...

PK-you snuck in there! Next ABNA cuts are April 26, so 13 days... (I doubt I'll make this round... I actually was confident the first and a little confident the second. I am not at ALL confident this time)

...i need that black and white goat in the bottom picture.
Also, in my family, we call baby goats goatlings, because it's cuter

A tale to make a face smile. I do hope Aunt M sees the humour in this now.

Very cute kids by the way.

what a cute pic! GOod luck on the 80 day challenge. I read about it too but I'm hesitant to commit. I scare myself with how much I don't get done.

Great post. Who knew K could be so much fun?

First, *squee!* at cute little you all kicked back. Are you wearing glasses? That reminded me so much of me and my brother and my cousin Kathy Jo when we were little. We were the oldest...

LOL at you baby goat! I remember being told that, too. And I remember one of my great aunts telling my cousin to shut up and go on b/c she corrected her. :D

*snort city* at your K words~ <3

I love baby goats! I am a goat, Chinese-zodiac-wise...

Last time I checked though, it was spelt "canoodling" - did that change when I wasn't looking? It's been known to happen, and goodness knows I get US and UK spellings all mixed up now...

Love the cute kids! I'm trying to imagine how your aunt M. reacted when you corrected her :) I was corrected too by my English teacher when I tried to use kids on my paper.

I'm going to start calling children baby goats. Good times.

An aunt that decks you when you are a smart ass is one of the best gifts life has given me too.

Hart Johnson said...

Lisa-I think she DID finally get that daytime emmy... teehee

Sarah-goatlings is indeed cute! (and possibly why I call my children childings)

Ann-she does--all those things are funny in retrospect...

Katie-You could do it!

Jenny-thank you!

Leigh, no glasses, just a reflective photo so it didn't scan well.

Leanne-I figure made-up words are flexible and the urban dictionary had it with a K, so it's legitimate in somebody's opinion...

Lorena, what she started with was 'you little...' but it seems to me she stopped herself then... teehee

Chris-good step there!

Abe *snort* She DIDN'T deck me, though possibly only because my mom would have beat her up. Mom was never physical with me, but I'm pretty sure she gave her little sister what for sometimes...

I think your auntie was WAY too sensitive. Those pictures of kids are adorable! Though adult goats kinda creep me out due to their eyes. Am I the only one who thinks those types of eyes are weird?

Cruella Collett said...

I want a kid!!!! You know, as in the goat-version. (I'm temporarily allergic to the other version.) Besides, having a goat might prove handy when you get sudden urges for goat cheese or if you don't know how to recycle cans. Aberforth had the right idea.

Hart Johnson said...

Marjorie-very possibly... It was back in the days when kids didn't sass much though... and I don't mind the goat eyes--I think they're cool...

Cruella-I know, right? And you don't have to put goat kids through college! We we could just remember the charm to remove the bezoar without hurting the goat...

Crystal Pistol said...

The thigh slapping version of kanoodling you described had me slapping my own thighs!! (Not in a self-indulgent was, you understand...)

Sooo funny! YOU ARE SOOOO FUNNY!

Plus I love the childhood pic.

V.R. Leavitt said...

OH my goodness, I LOVE this post! What a trip! I would have cracked up at the four year old you saying kids are baby goats. Great stuff. Good luck with the writing challenge too.

Great pics of baby goats too. So cute!!

You do have a fascination with all kinds of animals, Hart.

Love the "kids," the horned kind, but human ones might have invisible horns.....

Spenc said...

I think it's so funny when children correct adults, although I don't think I've heard any do so as precociously as it sounds you did.
The kids are so cute, did you take those pictures?
You can learn some pretty ... interesting things from the urban dictionary.
