What's Harder? Erm...

Nobody dive in the gutter. I am double entendreing but neither is sexual at this point in my blog (early days, yet, I know)...

For some context: Welcome to Insecure Writer's Support Group and First Wednesday! So this is what I will get to first. THEN I will talk eating plan (I'm on day 24 gang!) *cough*

As for the writing... say it with me... WHAT WRITING!?

*now for the tears* So many tears.

But I can still answer QUESTIONS about writing, can't I? That's legit. I mean I haven't totally forgotten. I've just lost my discipline. So let's do that.

June's question: What's harder for you to come up with, book titles or character names?

Totally character names. Easy peasy.

Know WHY?

VOLUME.

I only have to hit one title I'm happy with for a whole book and I actually have sort of a knack for it. But you know what? EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER wants their own darn name! Man, what a tedious exercise. I mean I usually do fine with my first 3 or 4, but then I begin to realize they all start with M, or some such nonsense. I need to get clever and have my names mean something. That would help. Or complicate things. One or the other.

These beauties make everything right
Now for the FMD Portion of this blog.

Know what is harder? All the parts that don't allow any fat. Phase I and II are BOTH hard, then I get to Friday and get to add healthy fat (avocado, nuts, olive oil) and suddenly life is smooth sailing. There are hard things about the supposed “soothing days” (soothing, my butt—I may be allowed carbs, but HELLO, no fat! Sooth Schmooth. It's not). And the protein heavy days... GADS! Five times a day and every single time is meat (and vegetables, sure, whatever) but that is a LOT of meat. Add to that the complication that the only meat I eat is turkey and fish. So the hard part is all the no fat part.

Know the irony? Those three days I get to add the fats back in are the weight loss ones. I'm not breaking any land speed records but averaging just over 2 pounds a week--always lost in those last 3 days when I add the fats back in (about 8 pounds so far and I have 4 days left).

I plan to MOSTLY continue, but the lack of fat on those 4 days is making my joints hurt, so I am adding in cooking amounts of olive oil on those two days and allowing myself the occasional social splurge or I will derail. I know myself, and I can do the no splurges for the 4 weeks (though I did have a couple splurges, but not bad), but to go on I need to make some allowances.

The body does need some fat. 20% of your calories. So the three days of balance are good and your body responds to that.

Do what works for you - like you said, you know yourself. :)

Congrats on following this diet. I have yet to break out of my sugar addiction, but I think about it every day.

So actually, high fat diets are good for you. Fats are sustaining, thus you get less hungry throughout the day. Plus, your body grows accustomed to burning fats and thus, burns fat. At least, that's what my hubby and I have found. Proteins are definitely more sustaining too. Anything but sugar.

Hey, writing will happen again. Don't stress. It's okay to have a dry season--especially while dieting. ;)

Since you're dieting, then it's no wonder that you're not writing. Whenever I try to diet, I have zero creative brain energy. Heh. And I'm with you. You only need one title, but too many characters need names.

That's why I brainstorm a bunch of names at once, focusing on one for each letter. Then they don't all start the same. (Don't count the first book - those two B character cane pre-named.)

I tend to have repetitive names when using "regular" ones, but inventing my own ones for speculative/sci-fi stuff has allowed for greater variety. It can still take a long time to come up with them though!

I'm with you on names versus titles. I need to get better at that because naming makes me sweat.

I'm still cheering you on with your diet journey.

Yes! Every time I have to name a new character, I feel as though I've already used up all the good names. lol

Hi Hart - keep going ... all will be well and it'll become habitual: like finding those character names ... easy-peasy! Good luck and all the best - Hilary

I'm with you on the naming.

I always write down the names as I'm considering them. Each one by itself is important to me, but so is the way all the names work together with each other. Are any of them too similar (happens all the time thanks to psychology and subconscious preferences)? Are any of them jarring when nested up close together? Stuff like that. Good luck with the diet, and thanks for the post. Happy writing to you! :)

Personally, I've decided that bacon is a good fat. And so is triple cream cheese like Saint Angels (my latest dairy discovery and addiction). Can't figure why doctors don't agree with me.

Anyway, I think it's great you're sticking to this regimen and losing 2 pounds a week. Losing too much weight too quickly always seems to lead to trouble ahead.

So many foods I just can't give up - bread being foremost. And nobody who lives with me will ever survive if I give up caffein - Diet Pepsi.

Characters are so much easier for me. The names just plant themselves in the story.

Oh yeah I can live without sugar. I can live without bread. I CAN NOT live without fruit and fat.

No bueno.

Best of luck!

I read an interesting IWSG post where the author said she researches geography and culture before settling on a name. Another IWSG participant said that a name needs to also be decade-appropriate, which makes sense if one actually wants to find the best possible name for the character.
I also like the ‘sound’ of a name. But as wonderful as a name ‘sounds’, the aural appeal should ideally be secondary to the appropriateness of the name.
Lots to think about.

Good luck with the eating plan, Hart!
