Diet Starts with DIE

We haven't had a good whiny baby blog for a while eh? Well it's time.

Two weeks.

I have been SO GOOD for TWO FREAKING WEEKS! Totally on points. Getting back to walking more again. I have done everything I'm supposed to. You all KNOW how hard it is for me to behave!

AND THE BLOODY SCALE IS NOT BUDGING!!! Down ONE pound in two weeks. For pete's sake, at that rate, I won't reach my goal for three years. Who can diet for three years? Gads! I'll probably be menopausal, which will make it all worse! #sorryTMI

Why is it that as we age, not only does everything start to hurt, and we mend slower and get sick easier... and our a FREAKING METABOLISM SLOWS DOWN! Doesn't it seem like if we have all those other problems it should use MORE energy to just... you know... exist?

I know I still need to get some sort of weight routine going. But SHEESH. It just should NOT BE THIS HARD!!!

So I am throwing out a plea to any of YOU—do you know any tricks after 40 for those non-moving scales?

This was interesting infor and I'm going to try some of these:

It ends up an ad, but the beginning info is interesting.

You can stop early. I just liked the info about the real things you could do (sleep more, eat pumpkin seeds. deep breath... apple cider vinegar before a high-carb meal... Don't NEED the pills.)

Update:  Today was weigh-in and it's 2 pounds in two weeks, but that is still SO SLOW!!!

Being a most NAKED over 40 (ahem!!), I find budging my spare tyre around my waist the worst!! LOL!!

Dearest Hart!! I have no idea how people like Madonna keep it up - I think she goes to the gym every day and does a 3 hour session per day?? YIKES!!! Not feasible for us mere mortals. And I don't think that's a good thing in the long term either!

I say either up your aerobics maybe? 10 minutes of getting out of breath (eg. running, skipping rope) so long as you sweat and feel your heart pump! Every day - just ten minutes. Or totally cut more calories down. Although that option for me is such a no-no! It's never easy and it's not nice at all! :-(

Good luck lovely lovely Tart!!! Take care

Get an exercise bike - love mine. Exercise at least a half hour every day. Drink more water. Do stretches throughout day. Eat more fruit and vegetables and less other stuff. Watch your salt. Stay strong and focussed! You can do it!

Hi,Hart,
No solutions for you, but I have noticed that whenever I stop exercising is when the weight was about to start budging, which means I have have to start over again.

Try cutting out bread. This is really hard (because I LOVE bread, esp. with soup and stews and peanut butter & jelly and...) but if I cut out bread I have a much easier time shedding pounds. As evidenced by my 6lb gain over the holidays thanks to all the sugary cakes, cookies, and breads and my weak will.

I turn forty this year and I have to say that my metabolism has been slowing for the past five. I have lost 23 pounds in the past year and a half. I have been the same weight for the past two to three months. I lose a pound then gain a pound.

Hart, I feel your pain. I don't even have any suggestions for us. I suppose I could exercise more and do some yoga but with school, family, writing and work- I just don't have any time to spare. I already sleep only 5 hours per night. :/ *hugs*

It takes time, Hart! That weight didn't zap you all at once either. Just keep exercising and watching what you eat and it will start to happen, big time.

I'm no expert. I sought expert help and was able to lose almost 35 lbs in the last 12 months. Nutritionists help. Also, a personal trainer for exercising. Both cost money and time, so they aren't easy. Just a few thoughts, though. I've always been told that you don't want to lose much more than 2 lbs. per week because it's not healthy or sustainable. Also, if you've just started a workout routine and are sticking to it you may see a slight blip upward on the scale as your body adapts and gains muscle mass. For example, in December I saw slight negative progress as my coach really piled on the strength training (I may have also consumed a few cookies).

I use loseit.com to track my calories. You can also track exercise with it. If you have a smart phone there's a real nice app for it that makes tracking even easier. And it's free.

You can do it!

Throw the scale out the window? Okay, maybe not the best solution, but it will move that scale. ;)

Getting old sucks. Being heavy and old sucks even more. *hugs to you Hart. I too am trying to drop some pounds while fighting the clock.

HA! Holly, that is my favorite solution!

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! I am following weight watchers... I could I suppose limit carbs in conjunction, but I find any 'don't' counterproductive... it's the rebel in me.

Joe, thanks for the app! I need to get used to using my phone for more, but that might help.

Ha! I have been there and felt that! I have a tyroid tumor (benign) that is at this point not going to be removed. I have a terrible time losing weight because of it. But oddly enough now I'm a vegan I am losing weight. I am down 7 lbs since 1-1-2013. It's a committment, but my doctor is monitoring me. I planned in advance all through December, (buying cookbooks and ingredients) how I was going to do this, and surprisingly, I am enjoying my food! I don't see me going back to meat and dairy any time soon.

Hart, weight comes off slower for women. Eleven years ago, when my husband and I banded together to drop a few pounds, it was six weeks before I began shedding weight. Meanwhile, he'd already lost 10 pounds!

Keep at it. Even with slower metabolism. We're the same age, so I know you can do it. And BTW - I eat mostly carbs. That's the rebel vegan in ME.

Don't give up Hart....

Drink DISTILLED WATER... it flushes the system of toxins much more efficiently. ANd I know this is hard to hear, but cut out refined sugars, starches, and salt. Your diet should consist of a ONLY Fruits, veggies, chicken, and fish. That's it, for at least a month. I promise if you do this the weight WILL come off.

Try and exercise a half hour to an hour a day. I know time is limited, but your health is important. You know I lost eighty-five pounds in a year and I was well over forty. It's not easy, but it can be done.

Good luck Hart.

Yeah, I hate the way my metabolism has slowed down too. Just to stay where I am, I have to eat less and move more. But if you're walking more these days then I'm impressed, 'cause the temperatures around your town must be frigid! We've had bitter cold here in Colorado, which makes me want to turn into a lazy indoor slug.

There are a lot of good ideas in the comments here, so maybe all I can suggest is to try interval training. I've read in several articles that a 20-minute workout, say on a stationary bike, with one minute at top speed then one minute slow and repeat, yields better weight loss and increased fitness results than long, intense workouts.

Whatever you go for, I'm sure you'll eventually succeed, just like you've become such a success as a writer!
