Stolen Feed

So on Friday I said tomorrow... and Saturday I said tomorrow... and then Sunday I didn' t blog, so now this seems entirely like I've built up too much drama for something that isn't huge, but it IS something I want to talk to you about.

Remember how I said Friday that my hits have taken a jump, and then I recommended a few things... well ONE of the things I recommended was my Sister Tart's Weight Management stuff, and she was tickled because a bunch of you must have gone OVER there (which is cool, thank you), but she sent me a note that night that her PING came back and brought her... erm... MY BLOG from some other SITE...

So I followered her link:

http://www.painomovers.com/

Which was a lot of Harry Potter stuff, but didn't tell me much, as it seems they link to TONS of stuff, so I put 'WateryTart' in the search thing:

And get: http://www.painomovers.com/?s=waterytart

MY BLOG, yeah? Not just an excerpt, not one blog, but a BUNCH!

So I scratched my head, as I do... and thought, okay... what do I want to do with this?

I mean YEAH... my first thought is... THAT'S MINE! And I want to stomp around and have my tantrum about somebody taking my stuff... but REALLY... isn't it sort of FLATTERING? It is sort of... you know... the big time, isn't it? Well okay, maybe not. It's not like the Huffington Post has picked me up or something, but... look at the result:

For starters, the RESULT is I've had about 200 extra hits every day. How bad can that BE?

People are reaching me who may NOT be part of this fabulous little familial circle of blogging writers... That is good too... I am extending my reach.

My Concerns?

But the blog is just... the BLOG... not my sidebars or any of my info. So I decided what I really wanted to do about it, was just to assert my ownership.

Thus the TAIL in all my blogs from here on out, asserting who WROTE IT (most often me) and where it was originally published. I've decided if my goal is to get around, I ought to just allow myself to be passed about, but I am NOT going to lose my identity over the matter.

SPEAKING OF

The OTHER bloggy issue I've had come up of late... So you know how I fly by the seat of my pantslessness, not particularly worrying about stuff? I got an email from Christy of  Christy and Erica about PICTURES... do I worry about copyright issues... Well, erm...

Okay, confession time... this wasn't out of left field. The BURROW only uses public use photos (mostly from Wikimedia Commons or else self taken)... because see... some of them are more diligent than I am...

But what that means is, this isn't the first time I've seen this debate or issue... Google Images is NOT a substitute for public images... (but it is SO DARNED HANDY!) Funny thing is, when I borrow a photo or art from a friend, I generally ASK and always attribute, but the Google stuff is out there without info (or info buried enough that the convenience of USING Google images goes away if you intend to reference source).

So I KNOW, I need to be more diligent... I even have PLANS to be more diligent... But I am concerned that that will reduce the volume of eye candy available for my readers who NEED IT!

So.... How do YOU feel about blog material being passed on?
And do you worry about copyright issues for pictures on your blog?

I have the sneaking suspicion those blokes would be pleased to strut their stuff on your blog. But perhaps a comment to the photographer - something about "if this is your photo let me know and I'll credit you" ??

As you warned me once, people are very sensitive about ownership of ideas, so I expect images are similar. I try to take my own photos (no eye candy in my posts as yet), and do my best to attribute inspiration and any quotes I use to the rightful owner.

If anyone ever thought my stuff was good enough to copy I'd really, really want the credit...and a bouquet of flowers, and chocolates and champers too, and some $ wouldn't go astray either. But failing all that, my name and a link back would be courteous.

Thanks to Sister Tart. I'm working on it. Nice to know there's others struggling on too.

I think you should assert your ownership cos your blog is yours and I'm sure before I started blogger the small print says that your blog's content is copyrighted (I think - I need to check!!!).

Ooooh I do work with a lot of copyright issues stuff and do know that all (well mainly all) images are copyrighted and it's always best to either seek permission to copy or at the very least to acknowledge the source. There is always small print to each of the images so it's worth looking for that too.

I just think it's polite that you are asked first before others print out bits of your blog for their own purposes!!! They need to be taught how to be NAKED!! :-)

Take care

Most of the sites that I've seen my stolen blog posts on are spam sites that are set up to advertise pharmaceuticals, etc. I've gotten them to pull a few down, but not many. No, I'm not wild about it.

As far as photos, I'll go to a site like morguefile.com for free photos for creatives. :)

Good Blog
I think the biblical maxim "Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you" pretty much sums it up.

If you have an issue with other people getting places off the back of your hard work, sans credit, you should be considerate enough to check if anyone else would like the same courtesy, whether for writing or images. I produce both, and I find my images, and sadly my ideas get ripped off every so often, it's not a good feeling, but there's little point in pursuing people, because it's usually so paltry.

Google is in some way responsible, it unselectively trawls the web, listing any and all images or text it finds, and because it is no longer seen as part of a website/blog context, people see it as somehow liberated from ownership.

Unfortunately the alternative is not to post anything at all.

Yep, I think you're hoist on your own petard there. And so am I. I don't usually use images other than my own photos but I always have a sneaky pete feeling when I do. And that feeling is my cue. I've had photos taken without permission (by a friend - who used them for paintings) and I was wild. So I think I'll stop using google images and look into that site that Elizabeth suggests. As to having blog posts stolen - I don't know what to think. In a way I guess there is nothing to do but follow it up when you get a chance and realize that like coyotes - once you see 'them' you know 'they've' seen you for a long time.

I don’t think I want my blog to get a very wide readership and exposure.

One of the things I like about the writer blogs, is that people are nice and polite. You never see these hateful and outrageous anonymous comments that you find in online forums and in the top-listed blogs.

When it comes to photos, I’ve been sloppy about this. Most of the photos I use I’ve taken myself, but sometime I use stuff I find on Google Images (my new year resolution is to improve on that).

sometimes i worry about the images. I typically try to find public pictures first. But more often than not i hit up the googs.

Deb and Barbara said...

How do they take your posts? And how do YOU still get the hits for them?! And how do you find out if you've been stolen???

Anyway, as for the pics -- I was pretty conflicted about this for a long time. So I finally signed us up at Picapp where you register and can download any of their photos for free (they have an editorial (gossip) section and a creative section). The proviso is the photos are "lightboxed" (see our blog for example) to advertise if anyone clicks on them -- which I think is fair. That said, my personal photos were also being lightboxed, which I thought was scandalous, so I asked them and they showed me how to set it up so only borrowed images are lightboxed. Now I am guilt-free!

I wouldn't be wild about anyone stealing my blog either. Images are a pain in the butt. I try to always snag ones in the public domain or licensed for reuse, but I'm sure others sneak in there.

Hart Johnson said...

Sue-I think they WOULD if I ever knew who they belonged to! I like the idea of the note, though--that is a good option for due diligence. *giggles at wanted payment*

Jenny-I believe copyrighting is as easy as SAYING it is... I think most of the pics I have are from BIG sites... like not blogs, but businesses. Which makes me feel less 'thievy' but probably I am even more vulnerable to them getting nasty about it.

Elizabeth-Thank you for the additional source! I will check them out! And I think Flickr has some 'public use' stuff. Good sources definitely help! This definietely wasn't pharma (believe me-I'd be all over ceasing THAT)--it just looks like a place that collects blogs...

UM-Welcome! I don't think I've seen you here before. And that is a great point--the problem is, I LIKE to be shared, but DO want credit, and the pics I find usually don't HAVE credit. (My friends who take photos seriously usually put their name on the image--that helps a lot, I think)

Jan-I, too, think I need to wean the google... so sad... it's so easy... Love the coyote metaphor... I actually had a deep fondness for coyotes, but don't tell anyone... They are just scrappy survivors (and the nicest dog I ever knew had a coyote for a daddy)

CaH-I agree with wanting to avoid the snark of... say Political blogs--I have some I like to read, but comments can get so NASTY. And YAY for a resolution to figure out how to do this image thing right...

Sarah-To date I haven't even TRIED that hard, so I need to, but I think I am most likely to be in your boat here for a while, until I sort out the reasonable sources...

Hart Johnson said...

Ha! Some sneakers!

Barbara-that sounds like a great compromise! I will look into that one! As to my blog being stolen-I never would have known without Jan--I think Ping is a system that tells you where hits come from, but I haven't used it.

Carol-Yeah-that is tricky, though it sounds like you are making due diligence, which I think is all that can be expected.

I was once told that if the images are out on Google you could use them. Wow, now I'm concerned. I'd never want to use someone's stuff without permission. Thanks for this post.

Creepy Query Girl said...

I wouldn't want anyone posting my articles (because that's kind of what they are isn't it?) without my permission or without citing the source. As for imaging, I'm a huge image theif. I figure, not many people are going to see the image or take notice of it. For me, it's kind of like cutting out pics from Seventeen and BBop magazine and using them to decorate my teenage bedroom...

Anonymous said...

I usually link the images I use to the website where I found them. That way people can go back to whoever stole the image in the first place and blame them for my stealing the image in the second place, which is probably more like the quintillionth place, since those images get around more than a drunken cheerleader at a frat party (no offense to drunken cheerleaders or frat parties intended--simile to be used for entertainment purposes only, and should not be given to young children or the elderly).

Wait...what were we talking about again?

Also, can you recommend someone to help me out? I have a grand paino I need moved.... O.o

Jen said...

I'm guilty of taking google images and never getting credit. I'm trying to cut back on taking images! As for finding your blog on another blog...that's creepy.

Kas said...

Whoa, I visited that site and it's crazy to see your blog there, pictures and all. What I want to know is who spends their time "stealing" other peoples' blogs? And whoever it is, how come they don't tell you when they start to do so?

As for pictures.. I am so guilty. I didn't realize until recently that apparently you can't just use google images. See, I post art on deviantArt and frankly, I feel like if someone took one of my photos just to show, I wouldn't really care. It's only when someone starts claiming what's mine is THEIRS that I care. Otherwise, I feel like if I posted it, I have to know people will see, and I hope that they will like it. If they like it enough to want to use it... cool.

Talli Roland said...

Yikes. On the one hand, I want to say that's flattering. On the other... well... I'd be angry too. The whole thing is just rather bizarre, but at least you're getting extra hits!

'm a bit lax with photos, too. I really need to take more care with that.

Will Burke said...

If I were plagerized, I think I'd have the same reaction: indignant, but flattered. I can't believe that they'd be so flippant about giving you credit! Sinners.
Funny thing; I stopped by to let you know that I linked to your "Goals..." post on my Blog. Tasty irony.

Gosh. This post has opened my eyes to some issues I'd never even thought about!

Ciara-that was sort of how I figured it worked until some of my more sophisticated Burrowers set me straight...

Katie-that is sort of what I thought for a while, but now I've integrated my intentions for world domination, so I should probably prepare for more traffic...

Simon-that's a pretty good back-up plan, actually. The pics DO take you to the source for that round... as for the piano... erm...

Jennee--creepy, but in a good way, right? *shifty* I'm relieved to find so many who've approached like I have...

Kas-Deviant art is actually cool--at least THERE you know who the artist is and can make attributions. (and yeah... it was VERY weird...)

Talli--I'm not mad, but definitely set to make sure people who read it know what's what...

Will-- I ALWAYS love links! There is no worry there at all, but it is nice to get a heads up, so thank you!

Weird about the feed. I think that is part of the purpose of feeds though so it’s tough when someone pulls the whole thing. It would weird me out.

Stepping on to soapbox now...
I’m one on those who is touchy with images. I’ve had people take my photos and illustrations and post them on their sites. And I list a copyright on all my pages. It’s not cool. Google images are just images around the web most of them are copyrighted. My images show up there too. Like you say the safest is WikiCommons or your own stuff or buy a clipart CD.

Stepping off.

I always try to credit the images of whatever source I use, but sometimes I forget. I appreciate when a site puts their info right on the pic because I can skip a step. Sometimes I use Youtube, or Photosynth. Those sources always link back to the original site and I think when you upload them you choose to share or not. I imagine the originators like being shared across the web too. Why else would they give out an embed code?

So far, I haven't seen much blog-theft. Or my books on pirate sites. I guess that means my stuff isn't deemed worthy enough to 'borrow'. I've had people ask to link to my blog, and I'll always say yes, since it's a link.

When I Google for images, I try to avoid any with people in them, and if the images seems to belong to someone, I try to mention where I found it.

I haven't seen material theft, although my book and other images have appeared elsewhere. That's all right of course!
Most of the images I post are movie posters, but other stuff... yeah, a lot of Google searches. Crap.

I have mixed feelings. If it's taken and displayed, but not used for money or passed off as theirs, I'm sort of okay.

As for images, I use zedge.net (phone wallpapers) and wallpaper images from google, as well as clip art that's free. I don't know if using the wallpapers is wrong...I haven't read up on that one....

I'm gonna check out the site Elizabeth suggested...

I can see why the dilemma with the extra traffic and all, but it all sounds weird. I like your disclaimer at the end of the blog.

I try to use only royalty free pictures, but I do worry about a copyrighted picture slipping by me.

This is a strange thing for sure. On two days last week my views jumped up to almost 300 a day. Now they are back down to 120 ish. I can't understand the reason for it. ditto re pic dilemma.

When I used to write actual words and stuff, I would have been happy to have the ideas reach a larger audience. But now that I've devolved into a mostly-photography blog, only posting photos I take myself, I'm hoping not to be overly pirated before I get good and figure out how to make a few bucks off of my efforts.

Hey, I can dream, can't I??

We've got this same discussion question scheduled for tomorrow's post. I don't think we'll get as much feedback so it was great to see what everyone here has said. It's good to know there are alternative places to find pics that are legit. We (I) didn't think twice about posting images from google until a commenter asked us about them and got the whole discussion going. DON'T LOSE THE EYE CANDY!!! christy

Hart Johnson said...

Holly, totally hear you and YOUR stuff is totally art--I'd look for a source!

Abe, you crack me up.

carolyn--thanks for more sources! I have trouble with YouTube (it is beyond me) but the other I will add to my list.

Terry-you're LUCKY not to hit the pirate scene yet!

Alex-yeah right? But like you, I figure anyone selling something, should be HAPPY for the space, yeah?

WC-that is totally how I've looked at it--I am making NOTHING (but I confess I will hopefully someday sell my books here, so maybe that will change?) Free clipart is another good one.

Jane-I am thinking it is a reasonable option... glad to hear you think so!

David-HA! Come share if you figure it around!

Cunning-I think I'd be pickier about photos, too, as it is easier for them to spread unidentified.

RaShelle-Weird, eh?

Christy--AH! I knew it was you, but I know Erica better, so I goofed! And yes... THE EYE CANDY!!!

That's it. From this point forward, I'm only using my own artwork. I'm not good at remembering to put links to the sources so no more borrowing.

Thank you for bringing this to light. As for your own blog being swiped, I'd be angry and want that link to cease and desist.
